Heyyyy! Today I’m sharing one of my all-time favorite recipes: homemade hamburger buns. But with a little twist — swapping out the usual vegetable oil for olive oil, and sugar for honey. Why? Because I love the subtle, rich flavor olive oil adds, and honey keeps these buns naturally sweet and extra soft. Plus, it’s a cleaner, more wholesome swap that still gives you that perfect golden crust and fluffy crumb.
These buns are perfect for any burger night, sliders, or even just to snack on with some butter and jam. The smell while baking will make your kitchen feel like a cozy bakery. Pinky promise ;)

Ingredients:
*Makes 8 Buns*
1 cup warm water (around 110°F)
2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (one packet)
2 ½ tbsp honey
3 tbsp olive oil (whatever you have, but if you know me, you know I love that extra virgin life)
1 large egg
3 to 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
Egg Wash:
1 egg + splash of water
Sesame seeds for sprinkling
Let's Make the Buns!
Activate the yeast by mixing warm water and honey, then sprinkling the yeast on top. Let it sit for about 5–10 minutes until it’s bubbly and foamy.
Add the olive oil and egg to your yeast mixture and stir it all together.
Mix in the flour and salt. Start with 3 cups flour and add a little more if the dough feels too sticky. You want a soft, slightly tacky dough.
Knead the dough for about 8–10 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic. If you’re using a stand mixer with a dough hook, 5–6 minutes will do the trick.
Transfer your dough to a lightly oiled bowl, cover it up, and let it rise for 1 to 1 ½ hours — or until it’s doubled in size.
Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each into a ball, then flatten slightly into a bun shape. Place them spaced out on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Cover and let the buns rise again for 30–45 minutes until puffy.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). If you want that classic shiny, golden top, brush the buns with an egg wash and sprinkle sesame seeds.
Bake for 15–18 minutes until the tops are golden brown.
Let your buns cool on a wire rack, then slice and fill ‘em up however you like!
Pro Tips for Perfect Buns:
Don’t skip the egg wash! It gives that beautiful color and shine.
Use fresh yeast for the best rise.
These buns freeze really well. Just cool completely, then freeze in a ziplock bag. Toast them when you’re ready to eat
